It is known for its aromatic fruit and for producing rakija with a distinctive varietal character, but today it is much less common in modern orchards than Stanley or the varieties developed in \u010ca\u010dak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why, at Destilerija Priji\u0107, we decided to explore something that may not seem obvious at first glance: can Crvena Ranka, a variety traditionally associated with \u0160umadija and the hilly regions of western Serbia, successfully grow and bear fruit in the far north of the country, in the lowland area of Vi\u0161njevac near Subotica?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After two years, two planting cycles, and a total of 200 planted seedlings, the initial results are encouraging. However, answering the question posed in the title requires us to distinguish between three things: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>whether the tree can survive and thrive,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether it can produce high-quality fruit,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether that fruit can be used to produce rakija of sufficient quality and yield to justify establishing a larger orchard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-2-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-2-1.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-2-1-600x800.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-2-1-300x400.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-2-1-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do We Grow Crvena Ranka?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the advantages of Crvena Ranka is its ability to grow even in somewhat poorer soils. In professional descriptions, it is considered relatively tolerant of diseases, although it can be more sensitive to frost. Traditionally, it is most commonly propagated through root suckers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our orchard in Vi\u0161njevac, we planted Crvena Ranka using a 4 \u00d7 4 meter spacing system \u2014 four meters between rows and four meters between trees within each row. This layout provides enough space for canopy development, facilitates machinery access, and allows for better light exposure and airflow around the trees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crvena Ranka is a self-incompatible variety, which means it requires pollen from another compatible variety that blooms at the same time for fruit set. The most commonly cited pollinators in professional literature include Trnova\u010da and Crno\u0161ljiva, as well as the modern varieties \u010ca\u010danska Rana and Stanley. In our orchard, we used \u010ca\u010danska Lepotica and Myrobalan plum as additional pollinizers to support fruit set.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-3-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-3-1.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-3-1-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-3-1-600x800.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-3-1-300x400.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Altitude an obstacle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Crvena Ranka, it is more accurate to speak of traditional growing regions rather than a \u201cnatural habitat.\u201d It is a cultivated variety, not a wild plant species tied to a specific elevation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In publicly available professional sources, we did not find a reliably established lower or upper altitude limit for growing Crvena Ranka. The variety is traditionally associated with \u0160umadija and the hilly regions of central and western Serbia. Development plans for fruit growing in the hilly areas around Kremna and \u0160ljivovica specifically mention the cultivation of plum varieties intended for rakija production, including Crvena Ranka. Kremna is located at approximately 822 meters above sea level, while \u0160ljivovica is around 803 meters above sea level.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vi\u0161njevac near Subotica is located at only around 122 meters above sea level. The difference is therefore significant, but altitude alone does not automatically determine whether a variety will thrive. Rather, it is an indicator of a whole set of conditions: summer and winter temperatures, nighttime cooling, precipitation levels, air circulation, flowering time, the risk of late frost, and soil characteristics.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Vi\u0161njevac, the biggest challenge is not the low elevation itself, but the combination of flat terrain, prolonged summer heatwaves, temperatures reaching as high as 40\u00b0C, and periods when nighttime temperatures do not fall below 20\u00b0C. Under such conditions, the plant does not get its usual nighttime recovery period, transpiration increases, and adequate water and proper nutrition become crucial for maintaining healthy foliage and tree vitality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Trial in Vi\u0161njevac: 175 Seedlings Over Two Years<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past two years, we have planted Crvena Ranka on two occasions. In the first year, we planted 75 young seedlings, followed by another 100 in the second year, bringing the total to 175 planted seedlings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first year, we planted grafted seedlings. With these, we recorded a somewhat higher percentage of failed establishment, and several trees broke precisely at the graft union. This result does not necessarily mean that grafted Crvena Ranka is unsuitable for the conditions in Vi\u0161njevac. The outcome can be influenced by the quality of the planting material, the rootstock\u2013scion combination, the method of tying and securing the trees, wind, planting time, and care during the first growing season. Nevertheless, in our case, the graft union proved to be a potential mechanical weak point.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following year, we planted another 100 own-rooted seedlings, propagated from root suckers. Their establishment rate was significantly better. During the first growing season, only a few trees dried out.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This result is particularly interesting because Crvena Ranka has traditionally been propagated through root suckers. An own-rooted seedling does not have a rootstock\u2013scion graft union that could break, and its growth pattern is closer to the traditional way this variety has been cultivated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this comparison should not yet be considered proof that own-rooted seedlings are always better. The two groups were planted in different years, so weather conditions, soil conditions, and likely the quality of the seedlings themselves were different. For now, we can reliably say only that, in our orchard, the own-rooted seedlings performed better during their first year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Irrigation and Nutrition as a Response to Lowland Climate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire orchard is equipped with a drip irrigation system. The trees are regularly fertilized, while the amount of water and nutrients is adjusted according to their stage of development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly important in northern Ba\u010dka. In the literature, Crvena Ranka is described as a variety that can grow on relatively poor soils, but this does not mean that a good and consistent yield should be expected in an intensive orchard without adequate water and nutrition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our biggest concern was that, despite regular irrigation and fertilization, the trees would begin to lose vitality during prolonged heatwaves because they are grown at a much lower elevation than the areas traditionally associated with Crvena Ranka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results so far are encouraging. Even during the dry period from July to August 2026, with daytime temperatures around 38\u00b0C and nighttime temperatures above 20\u00b0C, we did not observe any drying or significant loss of tree vitality.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not yet proof of complete tolerance to high temperatures. Young trees without a significant fruit load are not exposed to the same stress as mature trees with a full canopy and a larger fruit crop. The real test will come in the following years, once the orchard reaches full production and we can see how the combination of heat, fruit load, and water consumption affects the trees over several consecutive seasons.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Crop as Early as the Second Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grafted Crvena Ranka planted in the first year of the trial produced its first fruit as early as the second growing season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the orchard, we used \u010ca\u010danska Lepotica and Myrobalan plum as additional pollinizers. The presence of fruit confirms that compatible pollen was available during flowering and that pollination and fertilization were successful. However, based on the first crop alone, we cannot reliably determine which of the varieties present was the primary source of pollen.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-1-1.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-1-1-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-1-1-600x800.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/starakuca.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/crvenaranka-1-1-300x400.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does a Brix Reading Above 20\u00b0Bx Tell Us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analysis of the first fruits showed that the soluble solids content was generally above 20\u00b0Brix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brix, expressed as \u00b0Bx, is a measure of dissolved solids in juice and is most commonly used in fruit growing as an approximate indicator of sugar content and fruit maturity. It should not be considered exactly equivalent to the percentage of pure sugar or to total dry matter, since the juice also contains acids and other dissolved components. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A result above 20\u00b0Bx is very encouraging for our trial. It shows that the fruit not only set successfully but also managed to ripen and accumulate a significant amount of soluble solids under the conditions in Vi\u0161njevac. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is There Already a Substantial Crvena Ranka Orchard in Vojvodina?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While preparing this article, we did not find any reliably documented large commercial orchard in Vojvodina planted predominantly or entirely with Crvena Ranka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An orchard of 175 trees in Vi\u0161njevac cannot be considered a large commercial orchard, but it can be regarded as a significant trial and one of the few attempts at systematically cultivating Crvena Ranka in the far north of Vojvodina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, Can Crvena Ranka Thrive in Vojvodina?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the results so far, our answer is: yes, it can, but more time is needed before we can draw a definitive conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biological response so far has been positive. The seedlings have established successfully, are developing well, and have not shown any significant loss of vitality during periods of extremely high temperatures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results in terms of fruit production are also positive. The first trees produced fruit as early as their second year, confirming that flowering, pollination, and fruit set can occur successfully under the conditions of northern Ba\u010dka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technological potential is highly promising. Values above 20\u00b0Brix indicate that the fruit can reach good maturity and accumulate a level of soluble solids that is significant for rakija production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has not yet been proven is the long-term stability and economic viability of the orchard. In the coming years, it will be necessary to monitor yield per tree, consistency of fruit production, fruit weight and health, the balance between sugars and acids, sunburn, branch breakage, winter performance and response to spring frosts, as well as the actual quantity and quality of the rakija produced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, however, we can say that Crvena Ranka in Vi\u0161njevac has done more than simply survive. It has grown, flowered, set fruit, and reached Brix levels that justify continuing the trial. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crvena Ranka belongs to the old plum varieties that are spoken of with particular respect in Serbia.
